Stone FishThere’s really no better name for this fish. Literally looking like an angry fish made from rock, they are incredibly camouflaged and incredibly poisonous to humans. They are found in coral reefs and rocky areas on the beach. Stepping on one will cause immense pain and require immediate medical attention.
Tip: Try and keep a lookout for any strange looking ‘rocks’. It’s advised to wear sandals, or even these plastic jellies commonly worn by Tahitians, when walking in water. |
Mosquitoes and SandfliesThese will probably be your biggest concerns on the islands. Mosquitoes are prolific on the islands. Insect repellent will help. Sandflies (or nonos) deliver a bite worse than mosquitoes and come out mainly in the evenings. They are difficult to see. To the naked eye they look like a tiny black dot on your skin.
